Ivan Aivazovsky and his work
Ivan Aivazovsky: The Frozen Bosphorous, signed and dated 1874, oil on panel, 20.6 x 26.7cm, Private Collection, London, Catalogue Number CS-1874-018. In the second volume of Aivazovsky's paintings 'Light, Water and Sky', Gianni Caffiero and I have begun to compile a list of known works by the painter and to give them unique reference numbers. The procedure for authentication is as follows. Initially please send us, by email, photographs including, if possible, the back of the painting as well as dimensions and any known provenance, publications or exhibition history. From these photographs it is usually possible for us to give an initial informal assessment. There is no charge for this. If, however, you require our opinion in writing we must be able to make a physical examination of the painting and for this service we charge £750 (plus VAT in the EU). We also then require a professional photograph in .tif format for our archives.
